| Once again, the MARS/CARES ham radio club provided public-service communication support for the annual Mud Volleyball Tournament to benefit the Connecticut Epilepsy Foundation. Thousands of people braved the stormy, humid weather to participate in this huge event, which was delayed for more than an hour by a severe mid-afternoon lightning storm. The elimination-style tournament, which was completed at 5 PM, raised $30,000 for the Epilepsy Foundation of Connecticut, and was won by the Daffadildos, 2003’s second-place team. Special thanks to Gordie Barker, K1BIY, who provided his RV; Kit Kocielo, N1MCC, who provided commercial two-way radios for the event staff; Mac Harper, W1FYM, who patrolled the courts and took photos; and MARS/CARES club president Mark Mokoski, WA1ZEK/VK2IFH, who delivered the club’s emergency communication trailer. | |||
